Marit Stiles and the Ontario NDP are on your side with a plan for Toronto

TORONTO – Ontario NDP Leader Marit Stiles announced her plan to help fight rising costs.

She was joined by members of the NDP’s strong Toronto team: Chris Glover, (Spadina – Fort York), Kristyn Wong-Tam (Toronto Centre), Faisal Hassan (York – South Weston), Jessica Bell (University – Rosedale), Jill Andrew (Toronto – St. Paul’s), Alexa Gilmour (Parkdale - High Park) and Rozhen Asrani (Etobicoke – Lakeshore).

"Toronto is a city full of opportunity. But thanks to Doug Ford, it is more expensive than ever to find a home you can afford, transit projects are years behind schedule, people can't find a doctor, and your monthly bills for the basics just keep adding up.

This election, we can change that.

As Premier, I will fight rising costs. I’ll bring forward a monthly grocery rebate and real rent control. I will hire doctors, build affordable homes, open long-awaited transit projects, and fix schools. Because I’m on your side.”

Marit Stiles and the Ontario NDP’s plan for Toronto includes:

  • Funding the TTC to make it more reliable, affordable, accessible and safe by restoring 50-50 cost-sharing for operations.
  • Bringing in real rent control, also known as vacancy control, so landlords can’t jack up the rent between tenants. We’ll also close the unfair loopholes that exempt buildings built after 2018 and end above-guideline rent increases. The Ontario NDP will also crack down on renovictions, demovictions, and fix the Landlord Tenant Board.
  • Monthly Grocery Rebate that is based on how much the cost of essential groceries like milk, bread and vegetables have increased under Ford and is tied to income and the number of people in your household.
  • Upload shelter costs to the province.Toronto is struggling to keep up with the cost of emergency shelters. We will reverse decades downloading these costs to cities by successive Liberal and Conservative governments. We’ll also provide more housing benefits that help people move out of shelters into homes.
  • Building housing that meets your needs and your budget. The Ontario NDP will end exclusionary zoning and legalize more affordable housing options, including higher densities near transit. We will get the province back in the business of building affordable housing, including permanently affordable non-profit and co-op housing through provincial home-building agency.
